Important Budget Update

Please take a few minutes to learn more about the needs of the Cumberland County Schools and your opportunity to share feedback before the final county budget is approved:

  • CCS’ Recommended Budget requests an increase from the County to meet the needs of the whole child: The Cumberland County Schools is requesting an increase of $8.9 million in local funding to increase the number of social workers, school counselors and school nurses to the nationally recommended average over six years and fund other strategic priorities that have been identified by our stakeholders.
  • Cumberland County Manager’s Recommended Budget does not recommend an increase to CCS’ 2019-2020 appropriation: The Cumberland County Schools is recommended to receive $80,150,000, the same amount as the current fiscal year – no increase.
  • Public Hearing Opportunity: If you would like to share your thoughts about budget priorities in Cumberland County before the final budget is approved, Cumberland County Commissioners will hold a budget public hearing/work session on Monday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 118 of the Cumberland County Courthouse, located at 117 Dick Street in Fayetteville.

Additional Information:

  • Fund Balance: The school system currently carries a fund balance. According to a recent report to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee of the North Carolina General Assembly from the H1031 Working Group, “Fund balances provide school systems with needed flexibility for unforeseen expenses that arise during a fiscal year. School systems have no independent authority to borrow money or levy taxes in such cases.” To view the full report, click here. CCS is the fifth largest school system in North Carolina and has spent more than $3 million from fund balance on critical needs during the 2018-2019 school year.
